“What is “furry fandom,” you may ask? I’m really not quite sure how to describe it, even though the phenomenon has attracted growing media coverage. Best you visit Dogpatch Press and explore “furry fandom” for yourself.”

Michael Barrier, author of Hollywood Cartoons: American Animation in Its Golden Age (Oxford University Press.)

FURRIES love Anthropomorphic Animal media – from animation and fiction like Watership Down, to performing with fursuits.  Their creative hobby makes a network of meets and conventions around the world.  This blog is the most active source for news, investigation, interviews, and reviews to explore the Furry subculture.  Traffic reaches tens of thousands of views per month, with stories every week day. Expect bold claims, jaunty opinions, and lots of love (and fleas.)

TOPICS – (See also Special Features and Top Articles.)

  • Mainstream notice:  Here’s a summary of Furry media coverage.  Stuff that makes people say “what the heck are furries?”   dog-daycare-news
  • Crossover:  Mainstream acceptance. Influence that goes both ways. Pros who are One Of Us.
  • History: 30 years of activity. From older roots in funny animal comics and sci fi fandom, to the undeveloped nerd frontier.
  • Subculture:  Anything original from fans.  Conventions, events, meets, and unique activities like Street Fursuiting.
  • Superfans:  They do their thing with extra devotion.  (Like costumes that make people say “no way, a person made that?”)
  • Indie business:  For love as much as money. DIY, freelance, home-brewed, cottage industry, and entrepeneurial doings.
  • Creators and makers:  Costuming, animation, fiction, dance music, and much more.
  • “Furriness”:  What gets people into anthropomorphic animals?  (Yay for imagination.)
  • Stuff that isn’t Furry, but it’s in the dogpark:  Nature, fashion, theater, myth, psychology, Sasquatches…
  • Freaky cool stuff:  Trash, punk, kink, comedy, midnight movies, art films, or WTF happenings.  Anything that overlaps the plaid field of nerdy interest.
  • No judging:  Make-believe is for everyone.  Don’t apologize for what you’re into.  Celebrate liberty.

WANTED: Guest posts, like “Featured Fursuiter of the Month“. The main focus can boil down to ‘subculture’: what makes Furry unique, who’s in it and why, and relationship with larger culture. It helps to bring broad curiosity and familiarity with kindred spirits and other subcultures, to expand the limits of fandom.

Dogpatch Press was picked by internet and TV comedy brand CollegeHumor to spread exclusive news about their animated short series Furry Force. Patch then nominated it for the Furry community’s annual Ursa Major award.  It led CollegeHumor to lobby their viewers to vote, bringing unprecedented traffic to the award. Some criticized putting furries in a parodic light, but award organizers also praised the value of more than internal notice.

When Furry Force won the Ursa Major, writer Adam Conover said: “What better honor is there for comedy writers, than for the community that you are making fun of to give you an award for how much they love what you made?” Patch later appeared as a cameo in episode 3.
